A PATCH TO PROCESS THE RIVER’S BOUNDS, 2025

Woven Port Jackson and Black Wattle with Indigenous Seedlings
Created in September 2024, A Patch to Process the River’s Bounds reflects on Stellenbosch’s Eerste River as witness to layered histories: indigenous lives, settler arrival, agriculture, and invasive species. Created in collaboration with landscape architect Katy Rennie, the installation interweaves invasive Port Jackson and Black Wattle saplings with living indigenous seedlings, sourced from the riverbanks and botanical institutions.
Over time, the woven mat decomposes, while the indigenous plants grow into view, transforming the patch seasonally. The work functions as living sculpture—adaptive, cyclical, and ecological—embodying disappearance and renewal. It speaks to shifting landscapes, resilience, and the balance between human intervention and natural regrowth.
