The Stellenbosch Art Mile is a free, open-air gallery that stretches 1.6 km along the Eerste River. It is open to the public 24 hours a day.

Is there a fee to enter the ART MILE?

The Stellenbosch Art Mile is a free of charge and open for all. For those seeking a more in-depth exploration, guided tours will soon be available for a fee.

Where do I park?

Free parking is available near Eerste Kafee on Suidwal Rd, if you would like to start there, alternatively, if you are able to find a spot in “the Laan”, you can also park there for free and begin at the Eerste Rivier public park near Aunt Sophies.

When did the Art Mile open to the public?

The Stellenbosch Art Mile officially opened on 2 October 2024.

Who designed it?

The development of this ongoing project is overseen by a dedicated Steering Committee. Through its evolving art program, the Stellenbosch Art Mile will invite communities to redefine this public space into a dynamic platform for storytelling and diverse voices.

Can I book a group visit or guided tour?

I have a mobility disability. Can I use a wheelchair?

The Stellenbosch Art Mile is largely wheelchair friendly. However, please note that some sections include gravel paths and slightly uneven terrain, which may be challenging for certain mobility aids. We recommend using a wheelchair with sturdy wheels or visiting with assistance if needed.

Can I bring my dog?

The Art Mile is open 24/7, so should you wish to enjoy it with your dog at your own pace, you can gladly do so, any time of day.

  • Dogs must be kept on a leash at all times.

  • Please clean up after them.

However, for the safety and comfort of all guests, we kindly ask that no pets join our guided walking tours, once available. This helps ensure a calm and enjoyable experience for everyone and avoids any potential issues between animals. Accredited service and guide dogs are, of course, allowed. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. 

Will food and beverage be available during my visit?

Eerste Kafee, located along the Eerste River near the Markötter Sports Complex on Suidwal Street, offers a serene riverside setting where you can enjoy fresh coffee, baked goods and health option meals. It's a popular spot for both locals and tourists, providing a peaceful atmosphere to relax before or after exploring the Art Mile.

Aunty Sophie se Kombuis, situated at 1 Noordwal West, is another nearby eatery. They offer a variety of dishes, including options like breakfast, avocado toast and chicken toasties, bobotie and roosterkoek.

Additionally, the center of Stellenbosch is within walking distance from the Art Mile and offers a variety of restaurants and cafes to suit different tastes and budgets. Whether you're looking for a quick coffee or a sit-down meal with a glass of wine, you'll find plenty of options to enhance your visit.

Are there any restrooms available on the Mile?

There are no dedicated public restrooms along the Art Mile itself. However, patrons of Eerste Kafee and Aunt Sophie se Kombuis are welcome to use their restroom facilities while visiting. For additional public amenities, the Visit Stellenbosch tourism office in Church Street and surrounding town center offer accessible restrooms within walking distance.

Art Maintenance – How to Report Issues?

Your feedback helps maintain the quality and integrity of this public art experience for all visitors. If you come across any damaged or faulty artwork along the Stellenbosch Art Mile, please report it by emailing info@artmile.co.za. Providing details such as the artwork's location, a description of the issue and a photo (if possible) will assist the team in addressing the problem promptly.

Photography & videography?

Occasionally the Stellenbosch Art Mile takes photos or video footage of activities along the Mile. By enjoying the Art Mile, you grant permission to the Stellenbosch Art Mile to use such photos/footage for promotional and other purposes.

The Stellenbosch Trail Fund (STF)

The Stellenbosch Trail Fund (STF) is a community Non-profit organisation that aims to create and improve trails in the area. The STF team, works closely with the Art Mile, to ensure all areas on the Mile are maintained. They are funded by donations, so please feel free to contribute to this incredible cause whether online or if you see a QR code along the route.

Visitor Guidelines

RESPECT NATURE

Do not disturb the river, plants, or wildlife along the trail. No picking of flowers or plants.

LEAVE NO TRACE

Help us keep the Mile and Eerste River clean! Please dispose of litter in the bins provided or take it with you.

CHILDREN

Children are welcome. They must be supervised at all times.

NO FIRES ALLOWED

No fires, braais, or open flame are allowed on the Art Mile.

OPEN FOR ALL

The Art Mile is a shared space, be kind, patient and courteous. Please respect the Elderly.

The Art Mile is open to the public 24/7; however, please be cautious at night and during poor weather.
