Base of a Harvested Agave Americana Plant

AGAVE LOG HIVE, 2025

The Agave Log Hive reimagines human-bee relations by revisiting traditional log hives, countering industrial beekeeping’s mechanistic roots in the 19th century. Crafted from a hollowed Agave americana base, it offers bees optimal volume and natural insulation. Rooted in African beekeeping traditions, log hives invite rather than control—allowing bees to inhabit by choice. Positioned in trees, they provide an ecologically sensitive alternative that prioritizes the bees’ autonomy. The work explores coexistence and dialogue between human design, traditional knowledge, and the independent life of pollinators, highlighting the importance of rethinking interventionist practices in favor of ecological balance and mutual respect.
