PVA Paint on Brick Paving

SHONGOLOLO, 2026

Shongololo, the common South African name for a millipede, has its roots in isiXhosa and isiZulu, with the word referring to the creature’s distinctive habit of curling its long body into a tight spiral. This remarkable creature forms the centre of the mural, coiling itself for protection while quietly sustaining the ecosystems beneath our feet. Despite its size, it plays a vital role in enriching healthy soil. Across the 50-metre sidewalk canvas, its repetitive exoskeleton inspires an abstract pattern of interconnected forms. Echoing sun, water, flora and fauna, the mural celebrates this overlooked “eco-hero” and the profound impact of small beings.
