TRANSLATIONS IN SAILCLOTH: Reverberations of the perishable and enduring, 2025
AMY RUSCH
Blown-Out Spinnaker Sail, Rope, and Thread
Made from discarded spinnaker sailcloth, these works reflect endurance, time, and transience. A spinnaker, built to harness wind, salt, and sun, carries the force of motion through body and vessel. The fabric’s marks guide my stitching, translating memory and resonance. While synthetic material suggests permanence, its gradual decay becomes central. The works embody reverberation—echo, resonance, and layered trace—where what endures and perishes intertwine. Imagined as both visual and sonic, they return the sail to its element: carrying the sound of rivers and oceans, evoking movement, fragility, and memory across the perishable and enduring.
